For Korean brands where demand arrived before you did
Korean beauty and consumer electronics brands often reach a new market before any official launch, carried by cultural exposure. That is an asset most entrants would pay heavily for, and it creates a specific problem.

Why South Korea companies call me
The Korean position abroad is unusual, and the enquiries reflect it.
- People already buy us, through sellers we did not authorise. Demand this visible attracts unauthorised supply, and those sellers establish a price and a set of expectations before you arrive. Mapping that properly is the first piece of work.
- Category awareness is high, brand awareness is not. Buyers know K-beauty or Korean electronics as a category and cannot name you within it. That is a positioning problem with an unusually favourable starting point.
- Our channel logic does not transfer. Markets with dense specialist retail at home often behave completely differently abroad, where discovery runs online first and physical retail arrives later as a credibility layer.
- What works at home may read differently there. Climate, usage and expectations differ. Your product team knows which of the range suits; what is usually missing is a view on which of it argues best to a buyer who has never heard of you.
- Registration is holding up the launch. It usually is, and the commercial build should run in parallel rather than waiting for it, which is a sequencing question more than a regulatory one.
What usually gets built
A market entry brand platform
Built against the awareness that already exists rather than from zero, which changes the argument considerably.
Grey-market mapping
What already sells, at what price, through whom. Your actual starting position rather than a blank page.
Channel sequence and listing content
Which platform first, what the listing has to contain, and what the review strategy is. E-commerce and D2C launch.
A view on which products lead
Not a spreadsheet of every variant. A judgement on which two or three products carry the brand in that market and which arguments they carry. Your product team owns the rest.
Creator and content programme
Fit over reach, because in beauty a credible specialist outperforms a large general account. Content and localisation.
Launch coordination
Sequenced against registration so nothing waits. Market launch programme.
What transfers and what does not
Brand, positioning and visual system transfer completely and should be identical everywhere.
Proof, references, pricing logic and search structure do not. A Korean site translated into English will underperform in India for reasons that have nothing to do with translation quality.
For beauty specifically, the bottom two rows carry most of the conversion. The ingredient story, the climate argument, the shade or skin-type framing and the reviews are all market-specific and all rewritten rather than translated.
Questions overseas teams ask
Do you speak Korean?
I don't. We work in English, and Korean versions for your headquarters are handled by colleagues on my team.
Grey imports of our brand already sell there. Is that good?
Both, and the balance depends on the response. It proves demand, which is valuable evidence. It also means a price point was set without you. The effective answer is making the official channel clearly better on authenticity, range, freshness and service rather than competing on price.
Should we launch on a marketplace or our own site?
For most premium imported brands, marketplace and specialist platform first, own site second. Marketplaces provide discovery and credibility you cannot buy quickly. Launching D2C first means paying to acquire an audience the marketplaces would have given you.
How long does product registration take?
It varies by category and market and should be confirmed by a regulatory specialist rather than estimated by me. What I do is keep it on the critical path and sequence the commercial build around it so the launch is not waiting on a queue.
Tell me the market and the two products you would lead with
Two, not the range. Which market, and the two products you would put in front of a buyer there first. That tells me most of what I need for a first conversation.
