Market route
Small markets, high standards, unusually durable relationships
The Nordics are frequently dismissed as too small by Asian exporters. They are also transparent, English-comfortable, sustainability-serious and extremely loyal once a supplier is proven.

Why the Nordics suit a first European entry
Several characteristics make this a better starting point than Germany for many Asian exporters.
- English is commercially sufficient. Business runs in English across all four markets, which removes the largest cost barrier of a German or French entry.
- Buying processes are transparent. Specifications are published, criteria are stated, and a good supplier can compete without a relationship history.
- Sustainability evidence is decisive. Genuinely, not as a formality. A supplier with documented environmental data has a real advantage here.
- Relationships are durable. Winning takes longer and losing takes much longer, which suits a supplier who can deliver consistently.
- Volumes are modest and reference value is high. A Nordic reference carries weight in Germany and the Netherlands afterwards.
What gets built
Evidence-led and English-language, which keeps the entry cost low.
A Nordic positioning platform
Built on reliability, documentation and environmental evidence, which is what this market rewards.
A claims ledger
Environmental and quality claims with evidence and owners, because these will be checked.
English-language technical material
Website, documentation and buyer-facing pack. Website design and build.
Partner or direct route
Nordic distribution is concentrated, so partner selection matters disproportionately. channel communication.
Reference strategy
Because the first Nordic customer is worth far more than its order value in what it unlocks.
A single market first
Finland or Sweden typically, then the others, because the four are more different commercially than they look.
The evidence Nordic buyers actually check
Environmental and quality claims are examined here more rigorously than in most markets, and buyers are comfortable asking for the underlying data.
Claim, evidence, owner. Assembled once and reused across tenders, questionnaires and customer queries.
For an Asian exporter this is frequently the deciding asset, because the underlying facts are usually fine and have never been written down.
Questions overseas teams ask
Are the Nordics too small to bother with?
For volume alone, sometimes. As a first European entry they are frequently the smartest choice: English-language, transparent, and a Nordic reference opens Germany and the Netherlands afterwards.
Do we need local language?
Commercially, no. English is sufficient for B2B and widely acceptable in consumer categories, which materially lowers the entry cost against Germany or France.
Which country first?
Finland or Sweden usually, depending on category and where the relevant industry concentration sits. Norway is strong in energy and marine, Denmark in food and design categories.
How long to a first order?
Longer than you would like and more durable than you expect. Nordic buyers evaluate thoroughly and then stay.
Which Nordic market, and do you have environmental data?
Those two answers decide most of the approach. The second one is more often the blocker than people expect.
