Interim India marketing & market-development lead

Deeper than a fractional retainer. For companies that need the India marketing seat genuinely filled — leading a team, owning cross-functional delivery and representing India inside the group — while a permanent hire is found or the business case is proven.

There is a specific situation this exists for: your India marketing lead has left, or the role has been approved but not filled, or the business has outgrown a light-touch arrangement and needs someone genuinely inside the organisation rather than advising it.

An interim arrangement differs from a fractional retainer in three ways that matter — time commitment, decision authority, and internal standing. An interim lead sits in your management meetings, holds the marketing budget, line-manages the team, and is accountable in the same way a permanent employee would be. The only difference is the contract and the end date.

The scope of an interim mandate

  • Full functional ownership — the marketing plan, the budget, the calendar and the number. Not advice on those things — ownership of them.
  • Line management — leading the existing India marketing team, setting objectives, running reviews, and addressing capability gaps honestly.
  • Cross-functional delivery — working alongside sales, product, supply chain and finance, and representing marketing in India management forums.
  • Group and HQ representation — attending group marketing calls, contributing to regional planning, and translating between what headquarters wants and what India can deliver.
  • Vendor consolidation — reviewing and rationalising the agency and vendor set, which in most interim situations has grown unmanaged.
  • Succession — designing the permanent role, supporting the search, and running a genuine handover rather than a document dump.

Why companies choose interim over a fast permanent hire

Hiring a senior marketing leader in India takes three to six months if you want the right person, and considerably longer if the role is new, the brand is unknown locally and the reporting line runs to an overseas headquarters. Hiring quickly to fill a gap tends to produce a mis-hire, and a mis-hire at this level costs a year.

An interim arrangement buys the time to hire properly while the function keeps running. It also produces something unexpectedly valuable: by the time you recruit, you know far more precisely what the role actually requires, because someone has been doing it and can write the specification from experience rather than from a template.

Questions

What overseas teams ask

Are you an employee during an interim engagement?

No. It is a consulting engagement with defined authority, a defined scope and a defined end date, contracted with your overseas or Indian entity. Employment, payroll and statutory obligations do not arise, which is usually one of the reasons an interim arrangement is attractive.

How much time does an interim mandate take?

Typically three to four days a week, with more during launches or crises and travel as the role requires. That intensity is why it is priced above a fractional retainer and why I hold very few interim mandates at any time.

Can you start quickly?

Faster than a permanent hire and slower than an agency. Two to four weeks from agreement is typical, allowing for handover from whoever is currently holding the role and a proper induction. A same-week start is rarely a good idea even when it is possible.

What happens to the team when the interim period ends?

The handover plan is written at the start, not the end. The team should be more capable, better organised and clearer about priorities than when the mandate began, and the incoming permanent leader should inherit documented plans, live systems and honest assessments of each team member rather than a blank page.
