India market entry for Vietnamese consumer brands

Vietnamese consumer brands entering India are close to a blank slate — no category-level awareness to leverage, and no negative associations to overcome. That is a harder start and a cleaner one.

Vietnamese consumer brands occupy an unusual position in India: essentially unknown. Unlike Japanese or Korean brands, there is no cultural exposure creating category awareness. Unlike Chinese brands, there are no perception issues to manage. The brand starts from nothing, which means every rupee of awareness must be bought or earned.

That argues strongly for a marketplace-led entry. Marketplaces provide discovery, credibility and national availability without the distribution investment retail would demand, and they allow the proposition to be tested at modest cost before any larger commitment.

The realistic route

  • Marketplace first, deliberately — national availability, search-driven discovery, and a real demand signal within months rather than years.
  • A tight launch range — one hero product carrying the brand argument plus a small number of supporting SKUs. Range breadth is a later problem.
  • Listing quality as the actual shelf — images, content, specifications and early review generation do the work a retail display would do. Under-investing here while spending on advertising is the standard error.
  • Price to a defensible position — unknown brands cannot charge a premium, and competing at the bottom against Indian manufacturers with lower costs is unsustainable. The workable position is usually strong value with a visible quality argument.
  • Importer or authorised seller arrangement — avoids entity setup while demand is unproven; the structural requirements should be confirmed with the platform and with corporate advisers.
  • Earn credibility through content and creators — for an unknown brand, third-party validation matters more than brand advertising and costs less.

Questions

What overseas teams ask

Do we need an Indian entity to sell on marketplaces?

Selling arrangements for foreign brands on Indian marketplaces involve specific structural requirements that vary by platform and category, and should be confirmed with the platform and with corporate and tax advisers. Most brands begin through an importer or authorised seller arrangement.

How much does a marketplace launch cost?

Considerably less than retail and more than most first-time entrants expect, because visibility on a marketplace is bought. Beyond inventory and listing setup, budget for platform advertising, content production, early review generation and returns handling. The pilot establishes a realistic number for your category before you commit.

Is Vietnamese origin a positive, negative or neutral in India?

Largely neutral, which is a genuine advantage — you are not managing a perception. Where origin can be made positive is in categories where Vietnam has recognised manufacturing depth and where supply-chain diversification is valued by the buyer.

Should we consider quick commerce?

Only for categories that genuinely suit it — high-frequency, impulse or convenience purchases. Quick-commerce platforms demand high margins, ration assortment tightly and require replenishment intensity that a new importer will struggle to sustain. It is rarely the right first channel for an unknown imported brand.
